Van Gogh Immersive Experience

Last month I had the opportunity to see the Immersive Van Gogh Experience at Camp North End in Charlotte. This is one of five different Van Gogh filmed productions, where his artwork is projected and animated on the walls of a gallery space and everything comes to life around you while beautiful music is playing. The actual experience is hard to put into words. It’s an emotional journey. Having the opportunity to step into a painting by this artist… well not just one painting but many, many paintings… growing and changing and coming to life on the walls and floors all around you… it was almost too much. I loved every immersive second. If you are a fan you must go and experience this world!!

Few artist have had such a profound impact on me and my life as Van Gogh. My artwork has clearly been influenced by Van Gogh… perhaps more than any other artist. From starry swirly skies to the use of bold colors in my interiors and sunflowers I owe so much to this passionate artist.

When I was young, I saw a movie about Van Gogh and how his worked helped to heal a girl that was sick by giving her positive energy to help her focus on getting well. Although this was a work of fiction, the idea that art could provide someone a bit of joy, positive energy, and brighten their day has been a key factor in why I paint.

I feel like you can see Van Gogh’s influence in a lot of my work. Here are a just a few pieces that came to mind.

Making Happy Art

There are a lot of reasons why painters paint or artists make art. I paint because I like to make happy art. I think happy art makes happy people. On some level I believe that art can make you feel better. If you surround yourself with pictures that make you smile and that infuse you with positive energy, I believe it can make you a happier person.

I try to make art that makes people smile, or laugh. My art can be somewhat child like and simple. I have always been inspired by artists and designers that work in simple bold shapes and colors.

Some folks may find this a little cheesy and my art a little simple… and I’m okay with that. It is what it is! It isn’t for everyone. Whether my painting is your cup of tea or not, you should find art that makes you feel good and cover the walls in your life with it! You just might start feeling better and better!

A Walk in the Garden

Apparently I have taken a bit of a summer sabbatical from my blog. It has been a summer full of Shakespeare, gardening, costume hunting, graphic design work, a few online classes to sharpen my skills, and the occasional evening of putting brush to paper. I haven’t stopped painting of course! It wasn’t my intention to be absent from my blog so long, but alas, it is nearing the end of August! Of course being in Western North Carolina, we typically don’t get colder weather until later in the year so there are plenty of warm days ahead for me to enjoy.

One of  my biggest delights of warm weather has been working in my little garden. It is a little wild, but I have managed to grow several vegetables including radishes, squash, tomatoes, and copious amounts of lettuces! I also have several flowers planted in the garden. My current favorites are the zinnias. I want to copy some of their amazing colors! Nature and gardens are very inspiring to me as an artist. They also give me a great excuse to play with my phone photography!
